Experience Medical Tourism in Greece

Why Greece

Greece is the homeland of Hippocrates, known as the “Father of Modern Medicine”. Hippocrates and his students documented numerous illnesses in the Hippocratic Corpus and developed the Hippocratic Oath for physicians, which is still in use today. Greece’s numerous qualities and advantages can serve Medical Tourism and render Greece a top destination for international health tourists. Some of these qualities are the following:
• Greece’s high medical ranking, 14th place among 190 countries, according to the World Health Organization health system ranking

Bordered by the Balkan countries in the north, by Italy in the west and Turkey in the east, Greece is a beautiful country with breathtaking scenery, classical origins, a warm Mediterranean climate and friendly people. It is a country with thousands of islands, sun-drenched beaches and magical sunsets. In this country democracy was born and art and culture flourished. Visitors are welcome to walk in hundreds of archaeological sites and marvel at monuments of classical architecture. UNESCO lists Greece as one of the countries which hosts most of world's historical and artistic heritage.

Food and entertainment are also national specialties; the healthy Mediterranean cuisine offered at classy restaurants combined with the popular night life on the islands or mainland attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Greece offers very good accommodation and facilities with advanced technology which is in line with the European quality and safety standards. The country is accessible through numerous airports, sea ports, trains, buses which facilitate health tourism, combining the medical and the tourist aspect of the visit.
It is worth mentioning that the climate in Greece is Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm summers although it gets colder in the north with snow on the mountains. The best time of year to visit is between April and October as the weather is usually most pleasant.
The official language is Greek, but English is very well spoken and understood in major cities, islands or other tourist areas.
Greece is, therefore, the best place to combine health care services with travel and entertainment. Offer yourself a unique life experience in a Mediterranean Paradise and at the same time enjoy the benefits of the high standards of an excellent health care system.

II. A DAY EXCURSION to Delphi and the Monastery of Hosios Loukas
with short stops in the towns of Arachova, Itea and Galaxidi.

History of Delphi

The famous sanctuary of Delphi is located in Phokida, in one of the loveliest and most impressive of Greek landscapes. Its ancient ruins spread out over the southern slopes of Parnassos, beneath the looming, gigantic Phaidriad rocks, known in antiquity as Yampeia and Nauplia. Such is the splendor and magnificence of the setting that the visitor is overcome with awe and ecstasy the moment he turns his gaze from the olive groves of the Pleistos valley to those rugged crags which tower over and enclose the archaeological site from north and east.

In this place, with its exceptional terrain, the largest religious centre of ancient Greece was founded and enjoyed unprecedented pre-eminence, the sanctuary of Delphi. Its renown, which spread throughout the Mediterranean world, was due to the presence of the oracle within the sanctuary. The first oracle was dedicated to Ge, the Earth Goddess, who was worshipped in prehistoric times, along with her consort, Poseidon and her daughter, Themis. These early sovereigns of the sanctuary were later succeeded by Apollo, son of Zeus and Leto, who left his birthplace Delos and came to this spot. In the famous Oracle of Delphi, the god’s divination was given through the mouth of Pythia, the High Priestess at Apollo’s Temple.

Today the visitor can admire various interesting architectural monuments at Delphi. One of them is the Stadium (5th century BC), in the northwest, which hosted the Pythian Games every four years. In the northeast is the dorian Temple of Apollo (4th century BC) and a Theater, where drama plays are performed by famous Greek and foreign theater troupes today. The visitor can also see a set of “treasures”, the remains of small buildings, if he visits the erected Treasures of the Athenians, exhibited in the Museum of Delphi. Eastward, one could visit the renowned Castalia Spring, and below the motorway, the Sanctuary of Athena “Pronaia”, a true masterpiece.

The new city of Delphi, which was relocated a kilometer further to the west after the excavations in 1892, is a small beautiful city of modern infrastructure. Here the visitor can visit the impressive European Cultural Centre of Delphi, the Museum of Delphi, as well as many shops and workshops of folklore art.

Hosios Loukas

Hosios Loukas

Hosios Loukas is a historic walled monastery situated near the town of Distomo, in Boeotia, Greece. It is one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art, and has been listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
The monastery of Hosios Loukas is situated at a scenic site on the slopes of Mount Helicon. It was founded in the early 10th century AD by the hermit Venerable St. Luke, whose relics are kept in the monastery to this day. The hermit was famous for having predicted the conquest of Crete by emperor Romanos.
The main shrine of the monastery is the tomb of St. Luke, originally situated in the vault, but later placed at the juncture of the two churches. The monastery derived its wealth from the fact that the relics of St. Luke were said to have exuded myron, a sort of perfumed oil which produced healing miracles. Pilgrims hoping for miraculous help were encouraged to sleep by the side of the tomb in order to be healed by incubation. The mosaics around the tomb represent not only St. Luke himself, but also hegumen Philotheos offering a likeness of the newly built church to the saint.
The Church of the Theotokos, the oldest in the complex, is the only church known with certainty to have been built in mainland Greece in the tenth century. The Church of the Theotokos adjoins a larger cathedral church, or Katholikon tentatively dated to 1011-12.
Hosios Loukas is the largest of the monasteries surviving from the Middle Byzantine period in Greece. The Katholikon contains the best preserved complex of mosaics from the period of the Macedonian Renaissance. There is evidence that the monastery was famous all over Byzantium for its lavish decoration, liberally applied to all surfaces. Apart from revetment, carving, gold and silver plate, murals, and mosaics, the interior featured a choice assortment of icons, chandeliers, silk curtains, and altar clothes. Only a fraction of these items are still in situ, most notably colored marble facing and window grilles. Notwithstanding the losses, the Katholikon “gives the best impression available anywhere today of the character of a church interior in the first centuries after the end of Iconoclasm”.
Beneath the great domed Katholikon is a burial crypt, accessible only by a stairwell on the southern side. The crypt has three distinct areas: the entrance way; the main interior space which includes nine groin-vaulted bays and a sanctuary with vaulted bay and an apse; and three vaulted passages, referred to formely as bone vaults. The crypt contains frescoes on the entryway and its vault, eight lunettes around the walls with depictions of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection, and forty medallion portraits of apostles, martyrs and holy men, abbots including Philotheos, as well as numerous inscriptions.
When Hosios Loukas was frequented by pilgrims or members of Saint Luke’s healing cult, visitors would sleep not only in the Katholikon, but in the crypt itself where the tomb was kept along with two others, believed to be abbots. Saint Luke was believed to have been a miraculous healer, levitator, miraculous feeder and prophesier during his lifetime; after his death, all of the miracles associated with him involved the healing power of his tomb.

III. ATHENS Sightseeing with a guide in the most interesting sites of Athens

Athens, History and Culture

Athens, the capital of Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, is a city with the longest history in Europe. It was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. Being the strongest Greek city-state in the 5th century BC, Athens entered the Golden Age after the end of victorious battles against the Persians (500-449 BC). During the rule of Pericles, its powerful leader, Athens reached the peak of cultural and imperial achievement.

Athens is a diverse city. Visitors love walking in the streets of the famous historic triangle of Plaka, Thession and Psyri as well as the old neighborhoods with the well-preserved old mansions. The city is full of small shops, nice restaurants and traditional tavernas.

In addition, Syntagma Square, where the House of Parliament and most ministries are, is visited by thousands of people all year round. Some of the most renowned archaeological sites are: The Acropolis, The Odeion of Herodes Atticus, The Olympian Roman Market, The Panathinaiko Stadium and The Temple of Poseidon in Sounio.
The capital, more than any other European city, is famous for its night life. The options for entertainment are many, ranging from various types of night clubs to numerous theaters and performances.
